29 ARTS IN PROGRESS gallery in Milan hosted us for a shooting surrounded by beauty. And we have discovered why a fashion photography can become a timeless artwork. And how, with wisdom and love, a gallery has become a vital part of the cultural life in the new Milan.
Before Pulchra had its shape, its sounds and its colours, the bag was a shapeless set of leather, velvet, thread and screws.
For Frida Micheli, fashion is fun, a mirror of society and, of course, business. She lives every novelty with curiosity and enthusiasm. And she doesn’t leave anything out, not even the things she doesn’t like. Because even in the ugly there is much to learn.
The words of bags are beautiful, they are rich-sounding, they evoke the smells in workshops and an almost elite knowledge. Forming, binding, drumming. Or base, flap and backflap. Each part has a name of its own. The magic of Pulchra is also found in words.
The smell of leather and old things. Descriptions that seem to have come out of a book on travel and exploration. Marks on the leather that recall the origins of photography. Camera cases can make us dream. And they remind us that there is never an end to the stories waiting to be written
Valentina, a lawyer by profession, spent a day shooting with Pulchra and between a click and a change of outfit, we chatted about women and work, travelling and how never to betray yourself.
Designing a bag goes well beyond design. Listening to those who have more experience than you, spending hours and hours next to the craftsman, studying and imagining how new materials can respond and above all, mixing emotion and reason. Chiara Orlandini has drawn on all these ingredients in designing Pulchra, the bag of the first collection by Biddau.
This is our philosophy: recovering the slow time when BIDDAU women can wear unique pieces which will accompany them to discover new horizons and immortalizing in their memory and in their spirit those fleeting seconds to take with you and to hand on to future generations.
Niccolò Biddau, co-founder of the brand, is a photographer. It was his special way of looking which led him to imagine a bag designed for women who like to stand out from the crowd, but without ever betraying themselves.
Vita pulchra est means: let’s be contaminated by beauty, wherever it is.
On a boat, in the open sea, it was 2011. We met at a point which we then defined “where the world begins”, peering at the horizon, which then became our horizon.
